In recent years, Europe has benefited from a resurgent automotive industry, both in relation to traditional luxurious brands along with very high levels of investment by several global manufacturers of volume vehicles. This, in turn, has resulted in further significant investment in the component industry and Europe has been at the forefront of many revolutionary developments in automotive technology. However, global economic shifts, societal trends and environmental challenges will put its leadership role into question. Disruptive technologies like electrification, automation, and digitalization offer opportunities for novel business models and innovative transport solutions that will determine unique selling propositions of the future. A key part of the transition will then be to find ways to neutralize the threats and capitalize on the opportunities that it presents.

Clearly, these prevailing conditions impact the industry as a whole, but crucially, having led the way for much of the industry’s lifetime to date, Europe needs to take a bold step to secure a position at the top table for the next iteration of global transport and mobility.
